Vegetation-
Picea sitchensis (Sitka spruce) dominates the tree layer withTsuga heterophylla
(western hemlock) often occurring as a minor associate.Vaccinium ovalifolium
(early blueberry) is the most constant and abundantshrub.
Rubus spectabilis (salmonberry), Echinopanax horridum (devil’s club),and
Alnus crispa ssp. sinuata (Sitka alder) may be common associated tallshrubs. Low and dwarf shrubs are absent. Undergrowth species with high
constancy but low cover include
Rubus pedatus (fiveleaf bramble), Cornuscanadensis
(bunchberry), Tiarella trifoliata (foamflower), Lycopodiumannotinum
(stiff clubmoss), and Streptopus amplexifolius (twistedstalk).Physical setting- Sitka spruce/early blueberry is a minor type that has been
sampled on beaches and flood plains. It occurs on flat to nearly flat
surfaces at less than 50 feet elevation.
