D4 is the map component in a depressional wetland dominated by forest or woodland. Around Seward, D3 wetlands are often dominated by mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana). These are small peatlands in bedrock depressions not hydrologically connected at or very near the surface with other wetlands. This component is uncommon, either by itself or mixed with the shrub-dominated component (D3). We visited only one depression with a minor stunted woodland component, the others were mapped using only aerial photography.
