LONGMARE SERIES
The Longmare series consists of deep, somewhat poorly drained soils formed in silty loess overlying sandy and gravelly alluvium on outwash plains and stream terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 7 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 34 degrees F., and the average annual precipitation is about 20 inches.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-silty over sandy or sandy-skeletal, mixed Duric Cryaquods
TYPICAL PEDON: Longmare silt loam -- forest (All colors are for moist soil)
Oi--4 1/2 to 4 inches; forest litter.
Oe--4 inches to 0; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) mat of decomposing organic materials and roots; very strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (3 to 4 inches thick)
E--0 to 2 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silt loam; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; very friable; common medium faint mottles of dark grayish brown, and few small distinct mottles of dark reddish brown; roots common; very strongly acid; abrupt irregular boundary. (1/2 to 3 inches thick)
Bs--2 to 4 inches; dark reddish brown (2.5YR 2/4 and 5YR 3/4) silt loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; very friable; roots common; strongly acid; clear irregular boundary. (1 to 2 inches thick)
BC--4 to 8 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) silt loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; common medium faint brown mottles; roots common; strongly acid; gradual boundary. (3 to 6 inches thick)
C1--8 to 21 inches; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) to olive brown (2/5Y 4/4) silt loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure parting to fine granular; very friable; common medium prominent mottles of yellowish red; few roots; few pebbles; strongly to medium acid; clear wavy boundary.
C2--21 to 29 inches; silt loam, in irregular streaks of dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2 and 2.5Y 4/2), dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), and very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2); common small distinct mottles of yellowish red; massive; very friable; few roots; medium acid; abrupt smooth boundary.
C3--29 to 32 inches; strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) silt loam; streaks of dark grayish brown; massive; very friable; few to no roots; few pebbles; medium to strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary.
2Csm1--32 to 48 inches; mixed dark reddish brown (2.5YR 2/4), yellowish red (5YR 5/8), and olive (5Y 4/3) sand; strongly cemented; no roots; medium acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 20 inches thick)
2Csm2--48 to 54 inches; gravelly sand with same colors as horizon above; strongly cemented; medium acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 20 inches thick)
2C3--54 to 66 inches; olive (5Y 4/3) stratified sand and very gravelly sand; pebbles rounded; single grain; loose; medium acid; many feet thick.
TYPE LOCATION: Kenai-Kasilof Area, Alaska. SE 1/4, SE 1/4, section 25, T.6 N., R.12 W., Seward Meridian.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to the coarse substratum ranges from 24 to 40 inches. The degree of mottling and colors of mottles are variable in all horizons.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Ahrnklin(T) and Lucile series in the same subgroup. Ahrnklin soils have more than 15 percent fine sands or coarser in the upper control section and are not cemented. Lucile soils are dominated by amorphous materials in the upper control section and are also not cemented.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Longmare soils are on nearly level to gently sloping outwash plains or terraces. The regolith consists of silty loess over waterlaid sand and gravel. Mean annual temperatures range from 33 to 36 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is 18 to 22 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Kalifonsky, Salamatof, and Soldatna series. The Kalifonsky soils are strongly mottled and have no spodic horizon. Salamatof soils are deep peats in muskegs. Soldatna soils are not mottled and are commonly formed in less than 24 inches of silt loam over uncemented coarse substrata.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained. Moderate permeability in the silt mantle, impermeable in the cemented substratum, and very rapid below. Runoff is slow to moderate.
USE AND VEGETATION: The native vegetation is a forest of white spruce and paper birch. The soils are mostly uncleared, but some areas have been used for urban development, including home gardens.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western Kenai Peninsula, South-central Alaska. The series is inextensive.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Anchorage, Alaska
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Kenai-Kasilof Area, Alaska. 1960.
REMARKS: The range in characteristics and concept of the Longmare series are not well defined. More data is needed to better define this series or it should be inactivated (jpm 2/4/87).
