D1 is the map component in a depressional wetland dominated by standing water, including areas where the vegetation is emergent (rooted underwater, but growing above the surface). Most commonly these are small ponds in bedrock depressions not connected at or very near the surface with other wetlands. This component is most commonly found as a distinct unit, but it is also found in a concentrically arranged complex. Concentric complexes include other depression map components, such as D2 and D3. For example, a pond (D1) in the center of a depression, ringed by a sedge dominated component (D2), then a shrub or bluejoint grass (Calamagrostis canadensis) dominated component (D3) would be named a D1-3 wetland.
