Kenai Lowlands and Seward Wetlands ArcView 9.2 shape and layer files (v3):

wetlandsv3.zip (14.6 MB)    Metadata (included in download)

right-click and save target as...

The shapefile includes ArcView 9.2  .prj (Alaska State Plane Zone 4, NAD 1927) and .lyr files.

The layer file contains a 283 element legend for 16,994 wetland polygons.

To use the layer file (to view the full legend), you'll need to point to the layer's data source (wetlandsv3.shp), under 'properties' 'source' (after loading the layer into ArcMap).

Two data fields provide hyperlinks: "URL" links to map unit descriptions; "PhotoURL" links to photos, for those polygons with them (n=3240).  In ArcView 9.2, use 'display' 'properties' to select either field with the 'URL' radio button turned on and the 'support hyperlinks using' box checked; then use the hotlink (lightning bolt) tool to click on a wetland to view map unit descriptions and photos respectively.

A "HabitatF" field has been added to the .dbf to describe the habitat function of selected wetlands.  Individual Habitat Function fields are also present indicating  Crane, Coho. or Caribou use.  For more information see: Habitat.htm

Visit the Kenai Peninsula Borough website to obtain files useful for viewing with wetlands, especially the parcel shapefile.

Interactive Wetland Map on the Web

The Kenai Borough supports an Internet Map Server (IMS), where these wetlands can be viewed along with parcel lines and other useful information, using only your web browser and an internet connection.  After reading this page, and accepting the disclaimer to continue, allow the initial map to load then use the "View:" dropdown list at the top of the map window to select "Wetlands", at the bottom of the list.  Use the "Zoom to:" drop-down, or the "Zoom in", "Zoom Out" or the "Pan" tools to navigate to an area of interest.  Use the "Identify" tool to click on a wetland for a link to its description; scroll down in the pane at the bottom of the window and click on the active URL.  The FAQ on the initial page provides a helpful description of the navigation tools available over the IMS.
